Hellraiser Revival Cenobites: Every Demon and How They Play

Every Cenobite in Clive Barker's Hellraiser: Revival is unkillable — the official developer diary says you will "never be able to defeat them or kill them, but you will have ways of dealing with them," so each encounter is something you survive rather than win. The cast is the classic film quartet (Pinhead, Butterball, Chatterer, Deep Throat), but the story text also names three of them the Child, the Cabalist and the Fallen. Everything below reflects the game as of October 12, 2026, four days after launch, with no public patch note released yet.

Cenobite Roster at a Glance

Being Names used in the story Origin How you face them
Pinhead Also titled the Hell Priest; leader of the group Film veteran, voiced again by Doug Bradley Story-gated appearances plus the finale; the diary transcript says you have to "earn his appearance and his attention" (around 5:10)
Butterball Called the Cabalist in the plot summary Film veteran Disturbance-driven set-pieces rather than a straight fight
Chatterer Called the Child in the plot summary Film veteran Sound-and-speed chases: three runs through the Labyrinth, spread across the campaign rather than stacked in one section
Deep Throat (the Female) Called the Fallen in the plot summary Film veteran Appears mostly in the real world, staying close to Aidan and arguing you toward her side
The reborn Priest A new incarnation born in the finale Game-only Story event; see the spoiler section below

The Wikipedia character section spells the equivalences out: the game's Gash is led by the Hell Priest, "also known as Pinhead," and includes "The Child (also known as Chatterer), The Cabalist (also known as Butterball), and the Fallen, the female Cenobite (also known as Deep Throat)." Its plot summary has the box summon "the Child, the Cabalist, the Fallen, and their leader, the Hell Priest," and TV Tropes files the same three under paired headings — "The Child/Chatterer," "The Cabalist/Butterball," "The Fallen/Female Cenobite/'Deep Throat'" — matching the diary, which discusses the Fallen and the female Cenobite together.

Two naming sets, one cast

Wikipedia, TV Tropes and the diary transcript line up; Saber has published no roster sheet of its own. Guides listing four Cenobites and guides listing seven are describing the same cast.

What a Cenobite Actually Is in This Game

A Cenobite is a human transformed into a demonic being that worships sensation through extreme pain and pleasure; the orders they form are called a Gash, and Hellraiser: Revival treats them as godlike NPCs you cannot put down. Set twenty years after the 1987 film, the game frames the conflict as surviving "your bargain with the infamous Pinhead" while fighting the cult devoted to them, and the official site makes the same promise: take on "hell's wretches, deviants, cultists, and even its most infernal priests."

That rule drives the tension: the gameplay section of Wikipedia notes some enemies cannot be defeated in combat and must be sneaked past or run from. Cultists and Labyrinth fodder die to bullets; the Cenobites do not.

How Each Encounter Plays

Cenobite Encounter type What actually keeps you alive
Chatterer / the Child Three chases through the Labyrinth: one in the Scarlet Church stretch, one on the way out of the Labyrinth at the Field of Souls, one after the mid-game club Quick-turn when he appears, slide or crouch under the chains, never turn back before the metal door
Pinhead / the Hell Priest Rare, story-gated appearances with control of the environment Story beats rather than damage — you are not trading hits with him
Deep Throat / the Fallen Real-world persuasion scenes, close to Aidan Dialogue and choice; she is the one arguing you toward her side
Butterball / the Cabalist Set-pieces the developers called "mostly like very disturbing" Survive the sequence and leave; no kill window exists

Chase order and trophy timing come from PowerPyx's 100% walkthrough and trophy guide: first chase at the hallway save point during the Scarlet Church escape, second out of the Labyrinth to the Field of Souls, third after the club. GameTrek's boss list files all three under one "Escape from the Scarlet Church Part 1" entry; we follow PowerPyx. Pinhead's row follows GameWatcher's preview: he "will not show up all that easily."

Hellchains unlock from the Chatterer, not from a shop

Hellchains comes online the moment you finish the third Chatterer chase — mid-game, after the club — and wipes surrounding fodder when Suffering is full, which is what the "Unlimited Power!" achievement is built around. Save your Suffering for the exit of a chase — see our Genesis Configuration powers guide.

Official source: Clive Barker's Hellraiser: Revival — Official "Cenobites" Developer Diary — as transcribed, "The cenobites are extremely powerful and godlike beings... You will never be able to defeat them or kill them, but you will have ways of dealing with them." The same video says Chatterer's design was "the main focus was gameplay... because the player will have to run."

Deep Throat gets a larger role than Pinhead himself, per Analog Stick Gaming's review.

The Scarlet Church's Failed Cenobites

Led by Marlowe with Bruno as its artist-prophet, the Scarlet Church worships Leviathan and the Cenobites and mutilates people for the Rite of Rebirth, which members believe will turn them into Cenobites. The catch: the attempts produce monsters, not priests.

Failed ascension What happened to them
Charlotte Bruno implants the box in her chest; she transforms into a grotesque monster
Sister of Mercy One of Marlowe's failed Rebirth creations, fought as a boss
Marlowe Told by the Priest he was never destined for ascension and is "an ingredient"; turned into a hulking monster that flees to the cathedral
Bruno Resurrected the same way Sunny is, then abandons Marlowe's cause

So the cult and the Cenobites are different rosters: the table above is humans the church broke, which is why they fill boss slots in our boss guides while the true Cenobites fill chases. The Scarlet Church and graveyard walkthrough covers the facility.

Can Aidan or Sunny Become a Cenobite?

Spoilers for the final chapter

The two answers below name endgame plot points. For a section-by-section version, read our story explained guide first.

Aidan — yes, if you say yes. The Fallen makes the closing offer: accept and you enter the Void and become a Cenobite, earning "Experience Beyond Limits"; refuse and you stay human for "Human After All." Both land in one playthrough by reloading the final autosave, as covered in our both endings guide.

Sunny — not on screen. She goes into the Void with the Cenobites rather than being transformed on camera. The reborn Priest she delivers is the new form of the leader in our Pinhead breakdown, voiced again by Doug Bradley, who played the role in the first eight films.

What Is the Cenobite Edition?

It is a box, not a mode. Boss Team Games sells three collector's editions, and the Cenobite tier lets buyers pick a replica of the classic Lament Configuration or the new Genesis Configuration, plus a statue, art book, SteelBook and signed print. Nothing in any edition changes the roster — tiers and shipping delays are on our editions page.

FAQ

How many Cenobites are in Hellraiser: Revival? Four core Cenobites — Pinhead plus Butterball, Chatterer and Deep Throat — with a reborn Priest in the finale. The story text names that group the Child, the Cabalist and the Fallen, so counts of "four" and "seven" describe one cast under two naming schemes.

Can you kill a Cenobite? No. The developers say you will never defeat or kill them; you get tools to deal with each encounter long enough to escape.

Which Cenobite chases you? The Chatterer, three times: first inside the Scarlet Church stretch, second at the Field of Souls exit, third after the mid-game club. The trophies marking them are "No Time for Argument," "Run, Aidan, Run!" and "I Can Do This All Day"; Hellchains unlocks on the third.

Does Sunny become a Cenobite? She ends the story inside the Void with them rather than undergoing the transformation on camera. Aidan only becomes one if you accept the Fallen's offer at the final choice.
